Postpartum Depression
January 19, 2011Postpartum depression is an onset of depression that begins soon
after delivering a baby. Statistics show that postpartum depression
occurs in about 10% of women. The postpartum symptoms begin within a
few days of delivery but can mask themselves up to two months after
delivery.Postpartum is the period of about six weeks from the time of
birth until your body makes the adjustments it needs to return to
normal. There are a few things that can go wrong and if you're aware of
these you'll be prepared and they won't seem so frightening.Postpartum
hemorrhage ~ This can happen immediately after the birth or hours
later. It involves the new mum loosing a significant amount of blood
and can be very serious if not treated straight away. Fortunately
postpartum hemorrhage is rare, affecting under 20% of all births. Some
blood loss is quite normal during this period and is nothing to be
concerned about.
Perineal care is an extremely important part of postpartum care. Your
healthcare provider should provide detailed instruction as to how to
properly cleanse and care for the perineal area. Pain and swelling in
this area can be reduced using ice packs carefully wrapped in soft
material. Avoid placing ice directly onto this tender area as that may
actually damage the sensitive tissue. Sitz baths are also useful for
relieving perineal pain following childbirth.
Breast milk is the best possible food source for newborn babies and
infants. In kangaroo mother care, exclusive breastfeeding is essential
to nourishment and bonding. Breastfeeding provides all the nutrients an
infant needs to thrive, while giving the mother a boost in hormones and
stabilizing her anxiety or depression associated with child birth. With
the newborn baby wrapped to the mother's chest, it is within close
proximity to the breasts and able to nurse more frequently. Breast
milk, in addition to being the most nourishing form of sustenance, is
completely cost free.
Even a slight spinal misalignment can create nerve irritation that
snarls the body's nervous system. It is especially important for every
mother that nerve impulses flow from the brain to all parts of the
body. Nerve irritation can be relieved through gentle spinal
adjustments of a chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment offers a safe,
gentle, and natural relief of discomfort during pregnancy and ensures
that both the body and the spine are functioning normally.
Schedule to be seen at the start of a provider's office session. This
will reduce the possibility of problems occurring that can set your
provider behind. If you are scheduling an afternoon appointment, try to
get a time immediately after lunch (at the start of the afternoon
session). Most providers, who are running behind, will tend to use
their lunch time as a buffer to catch up if their morning session runs
late. Needless to say, this might mean giving up their allotted time
for lunch but that is simply how schedules are kept on time in this
setting.
Postpartum depression occurs on a continuum of severity, but for ease
of rating or classification it is often referred to as having three
levels of severity -- mild, moderate, and severe. Symptoms range from
mild sadness in the least severe to a complete inability to care for
oneself or the baby in the most severe. The most common symptoms
include anxiety, lethargy, insomnia, irritability, confusion, frequent
crying, decreased libido, eating disorders, obsessive thoughts, guilt
feelings, night sweats, feeling overwhelmed, forgetfulness, and
hopelessness.
Women have the unique quality of carrying and giving birth to the new
hopes and dreams of the human species. This is a time that has both
great expectations of hope and bountiful joy for all. These
expectations however may be altered or only briefly experienced. The
postpartum period may be influenced by several psychiatric issues.
These include: "Baby Blues", postpartum depression and postpartum
psychosis.
